Entrance R20
'Nutz' was formed in early 2009 with one simple aim: to play live classic-rock; those great songs that will live forever; from the late great Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin of the 60's and 70's;to the more recent 'classics' by the Foo Fighters and Oasis. But all have one thing in common:...
It's the beer-swillin', tequila-swiggin', draught-quaffin' and foot-stompin' kinda music that was born as 'bar-room rock; and as far as we're concerned, that's where it belongs - live and proud!
The musicians
Nutz is a three-piece band with Butch Cook on guitar and vocals, Derek Krijger on drums and backing vocals and John Archer on bass and backing vocals. Though from disparate backgrounds, each member has brought something unique to the band, and all are united in their love of 'classic rock'.
Butch Cook
Butch is a well known musician in South Africa. He cut his musical teeth in Rhodesia, playing with many bands as both lead guitarist and vocalist. Butch's musical career spans the most meaningful decades in modern musical history - from the late 1960's, through the 1970's, 80's and 90's and into the new millennium. We can honestly say that, whether in a band, three-piece, duo or on his own as a 'One-man show'; Butch has played more gigs in his lifetime than most people have had hot dinners! In a career spanning almost forty years, Butch knows a thing or two about music. And tequila!
Oh, and Butch can be credited with having a 'Number One' hit in South Africa!
Derek Krijger
Derek grew up in a bohemian, musical family with deep historicalroots in Knysna. As a child, Derek was quite happy to fall asleep behind the family drum-kit - despite the fact that it was in use by the band at the time! With such an upbringing, it came as no surprise when Derek turned to music. Derek has played with many well respected South African bands; most notably 'Barefoot Buddha' and 'Communique' during the 1990's. Initially a bass-player; Derek moved to the drum-kit, where his distinctive style drives the 'engine room' of the band.
Oh yeah...and he's one of the owners of Swing Café!
John Archer
John picked up his first bass guitarin the early 80's and has an abiding love and deep respect for the instrument. Playing in many local bands, trio's and duo's; including 'Radio Saigon', 'Raining Jane' and '5th Paradigm' - his musical career included a stint with Marlowe Scott Wilson's backing band and studio sessions in Johannesburg
