To clear up any confusion, this kind of printing has little to do with inkjet or laser printing, it does not use ink, toner or paper. The similarity to conventional printing is in the command from computer to machine and the ability of the machine to replicate what is on the screen.
3D, or three dimensional printing is also known as additive manufacturing. It is the process creating a physical object by using additives, mainly plastics as a medium, created as a 3D model. 3D modelling software has been in use for many years and now can be created by a 3D printer. The scope is vast, so far it has been used to make everything from toys, art, guns and jewelry to name just a few. This technology is revolutionary for its potential to bring affordable prototypes or become a full on affordable manufacturing process.
Printing 3D object starts with creating a digital design using a 3D CAD type of modeling program. It is also possible to use a 3D scanner to scan an existing object. Once designed it is then converted into a digital file format that effectively slices the image into thousands of layers. The 3D printer reads each layer and puts down one layer at a time, building up the object from the base up.The finished product is a smooth, 3D object, and if scanned, is an exact replica of the original.
Steps to print in 3D:
1. Create a CAD design or scan in your 3D object
2. Convert the design to the STL format (standard tessellation language) which is 3D printer language.
3. Move the .STL file to the computer that controls the 3D printer. Here you are able to adjust the printing properties, size, orientation etc.
4. Prepare the 3D printer with the additive that it is designed to be used with.
5. Start the building process. Each layer is about 0.1 mm thick, so this can take hours to days to complete depending on the size of the model and the quality of the printer. .
6. Remove the model from the printer. It may be hot and depending on the additive there may be toxins present.
7. The brushing off of residue or washing the object may be necessary. This also will depend on the type of 3D printer being used. There may also be a curing period required before it is solid.
Your 3D designs are only limited by your imagination and your pocket. The price on these printers are starting around R 20,000.00. Additives range from about R 360..00 for 250g and up to R 2,300.00 for 0.9kg per color.
The future always starts off expensive. I believe that in the not too distant future we will see these machines everywhere, not just in high end corporate design labs, they will probably be as common place as your inkjet and laser printers are today. They will most likely be fast and cheap to run...how exciting is that!!!

Things are changin', and only for the better at Ink Unlimited. We are saying 'goodbye' to the old look and 'hello' to the new.
Our previous logo did us proud for a season of more than 6yrs, and our 'girl with the inky hands' (we never did give her a name!) will be missed.
So what has been changed? Not just a new snazzy logo and font....oh no.
We have had our shop totally revamped, enlarged the showroom, upgraded the lighting, new colours on the walls and a really funky wall art design.
The signage and windows have been completely changed and you will not miss our delivery vehicle as it zooms around town delivering your cartridges :)
What does all this mean to you the customer?
Well, apart from having a nice new environment to shop in, we will be holding a wider range of products, more printers, more cartridges, more photo papers, more laminators, shredders and other office tools. Your choices will grow and, as always,we will be driving for the best pricing, backed by the best quality and the best service.
