Pietermaritzburg Flight Training Centre

The Private Pilot’s License can be used for recreational purposes or as the start to your professional flying career.

The minimum age for acquiring a PPL is 17 years old. There is no upper age limit providing that you are medically fit. In order to qualify for a PPL, it is mandatory that a Class two aviation medical examination is completed. As part of your enrolment procedure, we will aid in facilitating this.

The Private Pilot’s License course consists of a minimum of 45 hours of flight training and a theoretical knowledge course. Of the total of 45 hours, once you have reached the necessary flying standard, you will be allowed to complete 15 of those hours on your own! You will need a sound understanding of the English language and basic mathematics to be able to cope with the practical and theoretical demands of the course.

As well as the flying element, the student pilot will need to attend a comprehensive theoretical knowledge course to acquire the knowledge needed to pass the eight examinations listed below.

Air Law, Principles of Flight, Meteorology, Flight Planning, Human Performance, Navigation, Aircraft General (covering engines, airframes and instruments) and Radiotelephony (which includes practical radio work).

Students will also be required to pass an English proficiency test to prove competence in speaking the language.

On commencement of the course you will be provided with all the necessary training materials and equipment required for your training.

Course duration for the PPL varies as our training institution caters for both full and part time students. For full time students we offer a 64 day comprehensive course however the completion of which, in the allocated time frame, depends largely on the individual’s progress.
